Thrifting: The Do's and Don'ts

Thrifting: The Dos and Don'ts

First things first, you need to realize that thrift shops are not just good for finding last minute costumes.  They can also be a great place to find those fashion necessities.  Thrift shopping is a great way to save money on many items.  Here are some dos and don’ts of thrift shopping:

The dos:

Do shop regularly since thrift shops receive items on a daily basis, you will find different items every time you shop.

Do check for each thrift shop for discount days.  Many have 50% off days, and some even have happy hour specials.  Knowing these days will save you even more!

Do head straight to the best places in the store to score quality items.  Keep your eye out for the newly stocked racks.

Do take your time.  Thrift shops are places you have to dig out the gems, patience is key here.

Do try things on.  You don’t want to get home, not like it, and have to donate it right back to where you bought it from.

Do wash everything when you get home, this should be a given.

Now for the don’ts:

Don’t buy just to buy.  It is okay to walk out with nothing.

Don’t buy the basics here. Many times you can buy brand new white tees for cheaper at a regular store.

Don’t be afraid to alter.  If you find something you really like, there are many ways to create something new out of it.  For example: make a pair of cut offs out of jeans.

Don’t make a list of things you need.  Have an open mind going into thrift shops.
